It's been a real honour to be involved with the Creative Reactions - Pint of Science Festival that takes place this week in Nottingham around various venues, with talks and the grand exhibition taking place in the Nottingham Contemporary.
I was asked to take part in this exhibition/collaboration a few months ago and with the varied scientists and their disciplines on offer to choose from, I was more than happy to seize the chance to work with Steve Howdle Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham and his research team. I made 2 visits to the Chemistry department at Nottingham Uni and was kindly shown the labs where research into making polymers from natural objects - Birch Tree Bark from Sweden, Seeds from an ethiopian plant, orange and lemon peel taking place. I was shown the process involved and the finished product without the use of petrochemicals in the polymer formation/ and formula, this to me is key and a very exciting development for the future of plastic - indeed Industry is starting to take an interest in biodegradable plastics and rightly so, indeed, I hope this is the plastic of the future for both environmental reasons and our future generations, wildlife's health and wellbeing. Tomorrow I am looking forward to our Sci - Art discussion, panel questions and answer session at the Contemporary and Thursday I am very excited to be able to see the exhibition in all of its entirety. My work being exhibited consists of 4 pieces forming their own narrative namely, Tipping Point An Ode to Petrochemicals Future? Past? Green Chemistry. All tickets have been sold for both events which is a great success to those who have worked tirelessly to set up the event and festival.I will update with images of the event as it unfolds but for now sleep beckons ready for tomorrow night's discussions,
